The U.S. Food and Drug Administration proposed cigarette packs and smoking advertisements to have graphic warnings regarding health. These graphic warnings include different pictures and text mentioning risks of smoking like bladder cancer, diabetes, and lung cancer. Moreover, not many people know these risks. Also, smoking advertisements will also include 13 new warnings. According to the FDA, current warnings on cigarette packages are virtually invisible to both smokers and non-smokers.
Similarly, previously in 2011, FDA suffered from a failed bid for colored graphic warnings. But it was challenged in court by tobacco companies and was declined in 2012. But now, the FDA learned a lot from this experience. Therefore, after a lawsuit filed by several public health groups, a judge issued an order in March 2019. The order directed the agency to publish a proposed rule by August and issue a final rule in March 2020.
