Trump canceled a secret summit with the Taliban and Afghanistan’s leader

US President Donald Trump canceled a secret summit with the Taliban and Afghanistan’s leader. It abruptly slammed the door on a year of diplomacy to end America’s longest war. Trump says that he had planned separate talks with the two sides Sunday in Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland. But the Taliban’s persistent, grisly campaign of violence made them untrustworthy partners. Moreover, trump cancelled this meeting after Taliban’s attack which killed 12 people.

Trump’s tweet was surprising because it would mean that the president was ready to host members of the Taliban at the presidential retreat in Maryland just days before the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. More than 2,400 US troops have been killed since the US invaded Afghanistan. Moreover, this step was to go after the Taliban, which were harboring al-Qaida leaders responsible for 9/11.
