An IHC division bench comprising Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani was hearing the appeals of former premier Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam and her husband, Safdar, against their convictions in the Avenfield reference. The bench also heard an appeal filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) against Nawaz’s acquittal in the Flagship reference as well as appeals against his conviction in the Al-Azizia reference.

IHC tells Nawaz to Surrender. During today’s hearing, Justice Farooq said that the court was not declaring Nawaz an absconder and was giving him “one more chance to surrender”.

Maryam says Nawaz ‘anxious’ to return to Pakistan and IHC tells Nawaz to Surrender.

The court is not even giving an opportunity to explain the reasons for not appearing in court, Nawaz’s counsel added. “Don’t give a surrender date today, have a hearing next week and then announce it.”.

“Let us know if you fear any arrest at the airport,” Justice Kayani replied. “We will pass a written order in this regard. The court would also issue appropriate order on Nawaz Sharif’s request for exemption from attendance.”

The court also barred Maryam from appearing in court for the next hearing and said the federal government should also present its position on the matter.

Further hearing of the case was adjourned till September 10 whereas appeals of Maryam and Captain Safdar in Avenfield reference would be heard on September 23.

During today’s proceedings, Nawaz’s counsel prayed before the court that the former premier was not medically fit to return to Pakistan and that a writ petition in this regard is pending in the Lahore High Court (LHC).

On the other hand, the NAB opposed the petitions filed by the former prime minister and IHC tells Nawaz to Surrender.

The applications submitted to the IHC registrar will be taken up along the appeals tomorrow. A two-judge bench comprising Justice Aamir Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani will hear the case.

The former prime minister said that he had submitted his documents for extension in bail to the Punjab government but the authorities had deliberately rejected his application.
